Riverhead High School physics students took second and third place at the National Rube Goldberg Competition Long Island regional contest Saturday, Feb. 11 at the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City.

The physics conundrum challenging contestants this year: How to pop a balloon, using a minimum of 20 steps.

"Four Wise Men and John," (Kenny Somco, Jacob Funfgeld, Nick Herzog, James Rios and John Wendt) took second place.

"Geek Squad" (Maurinne Sulliva, Karla Vanston, Joanne Yeung, Ashlyn Whyard, Brianne Corwin and Bella Martucci) took third.

Riverhead's teams competed against teams from all over Long Island and New York City. Riverhead also took second and third place at the regional competition in 2011.
